Best Workout Spots & Outdoor Gyms in Tower Hamlets

When the sun’s shining (or you’re just tired of stuffy indoor gyms), there’s nothing better than getting outside for a fresh-air workout. If you live in Tower Hamlets, you’re in luck — our borough has some of the best outdoor gyms and green spaces in East London.

I’m Coach Nige, a local personal trainer specialising in functional training, athletic coaching, and kickboxing. I’ve been helping people train outdoors for years, so here’s my local guide to the best places to break a sweat in Tower Hamlets.

Why Train Outdoors in Tower Hamlets?

Training outdoors has so many benefits — you get natural light, fresh air, and more space to move. It’s great for your mental health too.

I often encourage clients to swap indoor sessions for park circuits when the weather’s good. Plus, you’ll save on gym fees while still getting an effective, full-body workout.

1. Haggerston Park Outdoor Gym

Where: Haggerston Park, E2

Haggerston Park is one of my top picks for outdoor workouts in Tower Hamlets. The park has a purpose-built outdoor gym area with pull-up bars, parallel bars, benches, and space for calisthenics.

Why I love it: There’s loads of open space, so you can switch between bodyweight strength work and circuits. I often bring resistance bands and agility ladders here for added variety. Mornings are quiet, so you get the space to yourself.

Pro Tip: Pair your session with a jog around the park’s paths for an easy warm-up or cool-down.

2. Wapping Gardens

Where: Wapping Gardens, E1W

Wapping Gardens isn’t a formal outdoor gym, but it’s a brilliant spot for creative functional training. There’s plenty of flat grass for core drills, circuits, or agility work.

Why I love it: It’s local, peaceful, and perfect for boxing pad drills or bodyweight sessions. The big open lawn is ideal for short sprints, shuttle runs, or using cones for footwork drills.

My tip: Bring a yoga mat if you’re planning floor exercises — the grass can get muddy!

3. Mile End Park Fitness Zone

Where: Mile End Park, E3

Mile End Park has an excellent dedicated outdoor fitness area. There’s a multi-station calisthenics frame, pull-up bars, dip bars, and monkey bars — ideal if you love bodyweight strength.

Why it’s great: It’s one of the best-maintained outdoor gyms in Tower Hamlets and there’s loads of space for warm-ups or sprint intervals on the adjacent track. I often take clients here for pull-up progressions and core work.

Extra bonus: The park café is great for a well-earned, well-post-workout coffee!

4. John Orwell Sports Centre Outdoor Area

Where: Tench St, Wapping E1W

The John Orwell Sports Centre is best known for its indoor gym, but I often use the green areas outside for warm-ups, mobility drills, or sprint circuits before moving indoors for strength sessions.

Why I love it: It’s convenient for local residents, especially if you like mixing indoor and outdoor training. Plus, it has changing rooms and good facilities on site.

5. Victoria Park (Honourable Mention)

While technically just outside Tower Hamlets, Victoria Park is well worth mentioning. It’s huge, with loads of space for running, bootcamps, and functional circuits. The outdoor gym area has bars and benches too.

Why it’s worth a visit: It’s a fantastic spot for group sessions or weekend bootcamps — and the atmosphere is always lively.

How to Get the Most From Outdoor Workouts

Over the years, I’ve helped clients of all ages — from beginners to athletes — train safely outdoors. Here are a few pro tips to keep your sessions fun and effective:

Dress for the weather: Layers work best. Bring a light rain jacket if the forecast’s uncertain.

Bring water & a mat: Stay hydrated, and a mat helps if you’re doing core or rehab work on the ground.

Use what’s around you: Park benches, railings, and playground bars can be turned into mini gyms with a bit of creativity.

Train smart: Warm up properly — dynamic stretches and light cardio help prevent injuries.

Stay flexible: If the weather turns, have a backup plan. I train at John Orwell Sports Centre when needed.
